Recology’s communications director hired me to assist the company in designing materials to educate and inform San Franciscans about its myriad recycling programs. I collaborate with the communications director, a writer/editor, a designer, printer, and internal developers.
Suite of recycling posters
CHALLENGE
Educate and motivate San Franciscans to participate in and embrace recycling and composting with a goal of achieving 100 percent diversion from landfill.
approach
Our strategy is to create educational materials across many channels to position San Francisco as an international leader in recycling programs. We produce:
A suite of posters for recycling, composting, and landfill that are distributed to all residences and companies in San Francisco.
A quarterly newsletter.
A suite of cart hangers specific to each bin that drivers leave on bin handles to illustrate correct sorting.
Social media and print ads.
A series of informational materials to lead San Franciscans through a two-year program to “right size” bins, delivering green composting bins, larger blue recycling bins, and smaller black landfill bins.
Materials announcing monthly neighborhood clean-up events
RESULTS
Recology educates and services San Francisco’s mandate to make composting mandatory in 2009.
At 80 percent, San Francisco has the best diversion from landfill rate in North America.
Recology is a media source for information about how to create recycling and composting programs in cities.
Industry leaders and other counties regularly tour the Recology site to learn about implementing recycling and composting program.
